Mechanostructures: Rational mechanical design, fabrication, performance evaluation, and industrial application of advanced structures

The review proposes a "mechanostructures" paradigm that integrates structural design, manufacturing, and performance evaluation to achieve target mechanical responses in extreme service environments. This approach moves beyond traditional trial-and-error or bio-inspired methods and aims to address the limitations of current structural design techniques, particularly in dealing with multiple performance requirements and complex manufacturing constraints.

Environmental impacts, pollution sources and pathways of spent lithium-ion batteries

Spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) pose various environmental risks due to hazardous materials like heavy metals and toxic gases. Improper disposal or recycling can lead to soil, water, and air contamination through leaching, fire, and explosions, posing a threat to both ecosystems and human health. The review highlights the need for improved recycling infrastructure, stricter regulations, and further research to address these challenges.

Variable Importance Plots—An Introduction to the vip Package

The 'vip' R package offers a unified interface for calculating and visualizing variable importance across various machine learning models. It supports both model-specific and model-agnostic approaches, including permutation-based, variance-based, and Shapley-based methods. The paper demonstrates how this package can be used to gain insights into feature importance for a range of supervised learning tasks.

Prediction of re-oxidation behaviour of ultra-low carbon steel by different slag series

This study developed a kinetic model to predict the re-oxidation behavior of ultra-low carbon steel under different oxidizing slag conditions. The model, validated with experimental data, showed that increasing slag oxidation increases oxygen transfer to the steel and inclusion formation, while higher basicity slags can reduce inclusions and improve steel purity. The research also reveals how inclusion types and morphologies evolve during the re-oxidation process.
