The global burden of atopic dermatitis: lessons from the GBD Study - 1990 to 2017

Atopic dermatitis ranks 15th among non-fatal diseases globally and is the leading skin disease burden worldwide based on disability-adjusted life years (DALYs). While global DALY rates for AD remained stable from 1990-2017, prevalence is highest in early childhood with a second peak in middle age, suggesting potential shifts in disease presentation across the lifespan.

Single-cell transcriptomes of the human skin reveal age-related loss of fibroblast priming

This study used single-cell RNA sequencing to identify four main subpopulations of fibroblasts in human skin. These subpopulations show specialized functions and locations, and their functional identities become less defined with age, including a reduced ability to interact with other skin cells like keratinocytes. These changes may contribute to the characteristic features of aging skin.

Assessment of skin of color and diversity and inclusion content of dermatologic published literature: An analysis and call to action

The study found that the average percentage of articles relevant to skin of color (SoC) across 52 dermatology journals is quite low (16.8%), with significant variation between journals. Higher-ranked journals tend to publish fewer SoC-related articles. The study proposes criteria for assessing SoC content and recommends that journals aim for at least 16.8% SoC-relevant articles per issue to promote equitable dermatological care.
