Current Status of the Algae Production Industry in Europe: An Emerging Sector of the Blue Bioeconomy

Europe has 447 algae and Spirulina production units across 23 countries, with macroalgae production primarily relying on wild harvesting and microalgae production concentrated in photobioreactors. The majority of algae biomass is directed towards food and food-related applications, including food supplements and nutraceuticals, while research is ongoing for uses in various other sectors, such as cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and biofuels.

In-situ structure and catalytic mechanism of NiFe and CoFe layered double hydroxides during oxygen evolution

This study reveals that NiFe and CoFe layered double hydroxides (LDHs) undergo a phase transition from the as-prepared α-phase to an active γ-phase under oxygen evolution reaction (OER) conditions, characterized by lattice compression. The OER proceeds via a Mars van Krevelen mechanism, with a synergistic O-bridged Fe-M reaction center (M = Ni or Co) stabilizing key intermediates and facilitating the high catalytic activity observed.

Interfacial chemical bond and internal electric field modulated Z-scheme Sv-ZnIn2S4/MoSe2 photocatalyst for efficient hydrogen evolution

This study reports a Z-scheme Sv-ZnIn2S4/MoSe2 photocatalyst with an interfacial Mo-S bond that significantly enhances hydrogen evolution. The optimized photocatalyst achieved a high hydrogen evolution rate of 63.21 mmol•g⁻¹•h⁻¹ under visible light, attributed to the synergistic effects of the Mo-S bond, internal electric field, and sulfur vacancies facilitating efficient charge separation and transfer.

Sustainable Energy Transition for Renewable and Low Carbon Grid Electricity Generation and Supply

This review discusses strategies for transitioning to renewable and low-carbon electricity generation, highlighting the need for technological advancements, policy initiatives, and infrastructure like smart grids. It emphasizes the five dimensions of energy sustainability (environmental, economic, social, technical, and institutional/political) and proposes a roadmap aligned with the Paris Agreement's emission reduction targets.
