Exercise intensity modulates interorgan communication and is associated with cardiometabolic health outcomes in humans

By testing a tiny human cohort of mostly young males, researchers found that sprint-interval exercise radically alters blood proteins and metabolites compared to moderate-intensity exercise, triggering intense organ crosstalk and fat tissue remodeling. Cross-referencing with large databases suggested these proteins are linked to reduced disease risks.

Commuting by bicycle (vs. by car) is associated with improved aerobic power, microvascular function and diminished CO2 output in the atmosphere

This study found that people who commute by bicycle have better cardiorespiratory fitness, microvascular function, and skeletal muscle oxidative metabolism compared to car commuters. Switching from car to bicycle commuting for 6 months led to improvements in several physiological measures and reduced CO2 emissions.

Long COVID and chronic fatigue syndrome/myalgic encephalitis share similar pathophysiologic mechanisms of exercise limitation

This small study found similarities in how Long COVID (PASC) and chronic fatigue syndrome/myalgic encephalitis (CFS/ME) patients experience exercise limitations, potentially due to problems with how oxygen gets to and is used by muscles. The researchers also found evidence suggesting that small fiber neuropathy in the skin might be related to these exercise issues in some PASC patients.

The Physiology of Sedentary Behavior

This review synthesizes research on sedentary behavior, finding that excessive sitting is linked to negative health outcomes including insulin resistance, cardiovascular problems, muscle loss, and altered metabolism. However, the research primarily involves small-scale studies on healthy adults, with inconsistent findings, leaving questions about broader applicability. Reducing sedentary behavior, even briefly, seems beneficial, but the optimal "dose" of physical activity to counteract its effects isn't yet clear.

Post-prandial hyperlipidaemia impairs systemic vascular function and dynamic cerebral autoregulation in young and old male adults

This study found that consuming a high-fat meal impairs both the body's and the brain's blood vessel function in men, making blood flow regulation less effective. This negative effect was more pronounced in older men, suggesting increased vulnerability to post-meal blood pressure changes. The study only included men and they all had high fitness levels for their age.

Accurate estimation of cell composition in bulk expression through robust integration of single-cell information

Bisque, a new computational tool, accurately estimates cell type proportions from bulk gene expression data by leveraging single-cell information and correcting for biases between sequencing methods. Tested on both adipose and brain tissue samples, Bisque outperformed existing tools and replicated known links between cell proportions and clinical traits like BMI and insulin resistance.
