The gut microbial composition is different in chronic fatigue syndrome than in healthy controls

This study found significant differences in gut bacteria between 25 chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) patients and 16 healthy controls, including unique bacterial genera in CFS and altered diversity, but critically failed to collect data on prior antibiotic or probiotic use, a major confounder. Certain gut bacteria, like Oscillibacter and Roseburia, were less abundant in CFS patients and correlated with cognitive function, suggesting a potential gut-brain axis link.

Women and men exhibit distinct gut microbial profiles linked to colorectal cancer development

In this study of people who tested positive for blood in their stool, men were more likely to have precancerous colorectal lesions than women. While both men and women had distinct gut bacteria profiles, only women's gut microbiome varied depending on whether they had lesions. Some specific bacteria seemed linked to lesions differently in men and women.

Antimicrobial activities evaluation and phytochemical screening of some selected medicinal plants: A possible alternative in the treatment of multidrug-resistant microbes

Methanolic extracts of several medicinal plants from Bale Zone, Ethiopia, showed promising in vitro antimicrobial activity against multidrug-resistant bacteria, particularly S. pyogenes. Rumex abyssinicus exhibited the strongest antifungal effect against C. albicans and T. mentagrophytes. Further studies are needed to validate these findings in vivo and assess their clinical efficacy, toxicity, and affordability.

Identification and antimicrobial susceptibility profiles of Nocardia species clinically isolated in Japan

Nocardia farcinica complex was the most prevalent species among clinical isolates in Japan, followed by N. cyriacigeorgica and N. brasiliensis. MALDI-TOF MS, using a supplemental Nocardia library, demonstrated high accuracy in species/complex identification. Linezolid exhibited 100% in vitro activity, while TMP-SMX retained good activity, although resistance varied among species.

Clinical characteristics and treatment of actinomycetoma in northeast Mexico: A case series

This case series analyzed 31 patients with actinomycetoma in northeast Mexico, finding Nocardia brasiliensis to be the most common cause. Most patients achieved a cure with combination antibiotic treatments including TMP/SMX plus amikacin or amoxicillin/clavulanic acid, showcasing successful management strategies for this neglected tropical disease.

Screening the pandemic response box identified benzimidazole carbamates, Olorofim and ravuconazole as promising drug candidates for the treatment of eumycetoma

This research screened a library of drug-like molecules for activity against five causative agents of eumycetoma, a neglected fungal disease. Four compounds (fenbendazole, carbendazim, tafenoquine, and MMV1578570) inhibited all five species in vitro, and four (fenbendazole, MMV1782387, ravuconazole, and olorofim) prolonged survival in an infected insect model. Benzimidazole carbamates, a class including fenbendazole and carbendazim, emerged as particularly promising candidates.
