The continued development of multilayered and compositionally modulated electrodeposits

Multilayered electrodeposits offer significant advantages in various applications, including improved wear and corrosion resistance, enhanced mechanical properties, and tailored electronic, magnetic, and optical characteristics. These benefits are achieved by precisely controlling the deposition process, using techniques such as pulsed current electroplating and careful bath composition selection, to create layered structures with distinct properties.

Common-path interferometric label-free protein sensing with resonant dielectric nanostructures

This study introduces a new photonic biosensor based on guided-mode resonances and common-path interferometry, demonstrating label-free detection of procalcitonin (PCT) at clinically relevant concentrations (1 pg/mL). While showing high sensitivity in a controlled setting, the sensor's practicality for point-of-care applications is limited by its complex setup and the lack of validation with real biological samples.

Systematic and collaborative approach to problem solving using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy

This paper proposes a systematic approach to XPS data analysis, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and prior knowledge. Using a molybdenum sulfate sample as a case study, the authors demonstrate a methodology for constructing peak models and interpreting complex spectra, highlighting the challenges posed by factors like surface contamination and overlapping signals. The analysis showcases how combining information from various sources can lead to a more accurate and comprehensive understanding of sample composition and chemical states, especially in cases of non-homogeneous samples, such as those of tribological origin.

Large-scale achromatic flat lens by light frequency-domain coherence optimization

This paper demonstrates a new framework for designing large-scale achromatic multi-level diffractive lenses using light coherence optimization. This resulted in the successful fabrication and characterization of centimeter-scale lenses (up to 10mm diameter) operating across a broad optical bandwidth (400-1100nm), demonstrating superior white-light imaging capabilities compared to traditional refractive lenses.
