Optics research in Colombia has experienced significant growth in the last two decades, with increasing output and citation impact, ranking second in Latin America after Chile. While international collaboration plays a vital role in the high impact of Colombian optics research, there's a need to increase the impact of research led by Colombian researchers themselves.

Scientists found that people in Colombia are doing much more research about light and how it works, becoming very good at it. They learned that working with scientists from other countries makes their light research important, but they want their own ideas to be even more impactful.
