GEDI is a new spaceborne instrument that has been specifically designed to measure vegetation structure using a multi-beam laser altimeter/waveform lidar. The GEDI science objectives are to quantify the aboveground carbon balance of forests, predict the role of forests in mitigating atmospheric CO2, and assess the effects of ecosystem structure on habit quality and biodiversity.
